Knitting projects

So, as my profile states, I dabble in several crafty endeavors...of which knitting is one...

I actually learned to knit when I lived in Los Alamos, New Mexico...I had moved from Kansas, and had left behind a sewing group that was fantastic...we had a monthly sew-in, where we went to a shop from 4pm to midnight, and sewed, chatted and ate all night long. I missed the camraderie and like-minded crafty friends.

So, when I saw the notification of a weekly knitting group in the newspaper, that stated they would teach anyone who wanted to learn, I jumped at the opportunity. And to my surprise, I loved it!

I don't knit nearly as much as I did while I lived there, but occasionally I finish a project, yeah!

This first project was quite a work in progress...I fell in love with the yarn...Sensations, sold in JoAnn's stores...it is acrylic, but sooo soft, and not at all itchy, even with the fuzzyness...and it is self-striping...so I bought all the store had in this color, and started a lap blanket for myself....I knew that I didn't have enough yarn, but I figured that the store would restock it, and I would purchase the rest that I needed.

Well, that didn't happen! The store never restocked the yarn! I went to the other stores in town, no good. Then I tried online...still no yarn. I waited half a year, still no sign of the yarn...I was so bummed!

But I really liked this yarn, so I ripped out the afghan, and made myself a scarf.

reversible cabled scarf

I found an awesome pattern online for a reversible cabled scarf, that is really just one big cable...its fabulous! It was quick to work up, and not a difficult pattern at all. When I make it again, I'll actually use larger needles, because the 10.5's that I used actually made a stiffer fabric than I wanted...but I didn't make up my mind about that until the scarf was almost done, so I'll leave this one how it is. I love it!

Here's the clincher though...about a month after I finished the scarf...guess what I saw in my local JoAnn's???? That's right...my yarn! At first I was upset...but then I just laughed, because there is no way that I'm gonna rip out my scarf!!!

Next is my most recent project...I have a favorite pattern book that I turn to any time I want to make a baby blanket...do you have pattern books like that? My favorite is "Quick Knit Baby Afghans" by Leisure Arts. I have made four or five of the patterns...and have loved each and every one of them.

baby blanket

This blanket has an alternating pattern of knit and purl stitches, that make it look like it is made up of alternating squares...so easy, but so great looking! Here is a closer look at the pattern...

baby blanket closeup

I almost always make baby blankets out of cotton yarn, its just a personal preference of mine, I love the weight of the blanket. All of these patterns call for knitting with two strands held together, which is why they come together so quickly. They do take a lot of yarn...usually about 700 yards of both colors.

As far as colors go, I have always used one solid and one variegated...I like the way they blend. I like the colors available in the baby yarns now...they are so much more varied than just pastel pink and blue...it's fabulous. What is not fabulous, however, is the million or so ends that I have to weave in when I use those small balls of baby yarn...ugh.

So imagine my delight when I found a huge ball of cotton yarn! And I mean, huge! JoAnn's (and other places) sell Bernat Handicrafter Cotton yarn...and the huge skeins have over 600 yards in even the ombre colors...more in the solid colors! It was great! I made this whole 36" x 36" baby blanket from just one skein of each color!

This blanket now has a new home waiting for the arrival of my newest nephew, due at the beginning of April 2011...he is coming to northern Idaho, so I'm sure that a warm blanket will come in handy!

Enjoy,

Meredith

The last of the Christmas Cards

Wow, it's been a while since I've posted...but I have some projects that I'd love to share, even though they are out of season now...

But the great thing about Christmas, is it comes every year!

My 11 yo son and I were a part of a Christmas card exchange on the Cardmaker's message board...they are so nice to let children participate! He made some great cards...not all the same, like his Halloween ones were, but these all following the same design...

nathan's card exchange

I chose the sketch, he chose the papers and the stamps and the colors...didn't he do a fabulous job?

He did all the stamping himself...I helped with a bit of cutting and adhering the layers...

I made cards for the exchange as well...most have already been posted to the blog, but I have two more to share...

For this one, I was trying to capture an idea that I saw in my wanderings across the web...I'm not totally pleased with the results, so I'll be working on it again next year.

snow tree

For the last one, I tried the brick wall technique from splitcoast stampers resource page...I've wanted to try it ever since I first saw it, and finally did...I love how this card turned out!

brick wall

That's it for the Christmas cards...until next fall, I guess!

chipboard paint & glitter

For this one I painted the chipboard, then stamped snowflakes with glue and sprinkled them with fine glitter.

chipboard heat emboss

For this card I covered the chipboard with versamark ink, then sprinkled them with sparkly black embossing powder and melted it with a heat gun.

chipboard stamp & emboss

For this card I stamped the chipboard butterfly with a background stamp, ran it through the cuttlebug embossing folder to add the polka dots, then spritzed with smooch shimmer spray.

chipboard paper covered

For this card, I covered the chipboard leaves with a glue stick, stuck it to patterned paper, used an exacto knife to trim closely, then used sandpaper to distress the edges.

All in all, it sure was a lot of fun!

Thanks for looking,

Meredith

Sugar Crash Crop! Nov 4th - Nov 6th

Welcome to the next blog of the Sugar Crash Crop Blog Hop!!!

You should have come here from Carolyn King's blog, does she not have fabulous style? I love her daughter's 'couch' moment...lol. If you got here from another route...then be sure to click on over to Lora's blog to start, so that you don't miss out on any of the sugary sweet fun!

Why hop around? Well, there are 16 stops on the hop where you can win a prize or pick up a cool sketch or digital image. The only way to win the prizes is to leave a comment on that blog AND its always nice to say thank you for the freebies too. PLUS, our blog hosts have worked very hard and we want to show a little love and appreciation!

You are invited to participate in the Sugar Crash Crop at Cardswaps, too. There are 10 challenges to be posted over the next three days (November 4th thru 6th, 2010) and EVERY challenge will have a winner! What is the prize, you ask? A papercrafts book from Cardmaker Magazine!! Plus, one lucky crop participant will win a cardmaking kit that makes 50 cards! It is very cool, you must play along!

Now, on to my project!!!

With a theme like Sugar Crash...I needed something sweet...what could be sweeter than card candy???

What is card candy, you may ask? No, it has nothing to do with the quickly dwindling bowl of tootsie rolls on my table....well, unless you count them as a source of energy, that is!

Card candy is an embellishment that you make to put on your card...have you ever die-cut a shape? Punched a border? Stamped and matted a sentiment? Paper-pieced an image? Sure you have! Well, you've made card candy!!!

Sometimes, you can make up several coordinating embellishments, and store them together so that when you want to make up a card quickly, you can have them ready to go...sort of a compliment to a card kit if you want to do some card making on the go...

So, in honor of the Sugar Crash Crop, I made up some Christmas Card Candy!

Photobucket

I used some stamps from Unity (mittens and sentiment) and Penny Black (joy seal), some fabulously glittery papers from My Mind's Eye (green snowflakes and red/cream swirl) and scraps from other projects (red cardstock and green linen printed paper), scarlet ink from TPC Studios, punches from EK Success (ticket, square, circle) and unknown (snowflake) and the great little loopy scalloped circles were cut on my Cricut using Make the Cut software.

Here is a different angle of the card candy, to show off the glitter better!

Photobucket

I believe that the holiday season is my favorite time of the year! It is certainly a busy time, with my birthday, Christmas and my wedding anniversary all in one week! I love the cooler weather, I love pulling out the scarves to wear, I love choosing the new Christmas music to listen to this year...I love it all! I wish each and every one of you a happy holiday season this year!

You have until 11:59pm CST, November 6th, 2010 to post your comments on the blogs along the hop. (That includes mine, please!) Everyone that comments on my blog will be entered in the drawing to win a prize from me!

Are you ready for some Christmas card making? How about some card candy to start you off? The prize that a lucky blog commenter will win from my blog is a set of the card candy that I made above, plus, all the goodies that you see in the picture below!

It includes 6x6 patterned paper and cardstock, die cut shapes, punched border, alphabet fabric stickers, paper flowers and pewter metal embellishments!

In addition, if you want to participate in the challenges for the Sugar Crash Crop go check it out after the blog hop and upload your completed projects by 11:59pm CST, November 8th, 2010. There are prizes to win there, too!

All things Halloween

I wanted to gather some more of my Halloween cards for this year into one post...partly because I wanted to see what I had done in one place...partly to enter them in the Moxie Fab World Challenge to show off your creepy creations...

I'm not sure that too many of mine qualify for creepy...but they're all Halloween!

My 11 year old son and I joined a Halloween card exchange on my favorite message board here, and so with a little design help from mom he got to make eight cards to send out around the US and even one to Russia!

This is the card that he put together

Photobucket

And he even decorated the inside a bit too

Photobucket

We sure had fun putting all of these together! He wrote a quick note on the inside, signed his creation on the back, and mailed them off!

I borrowed his design, and with a few variations, made cards for my nieces and nephews...which is something that I have been meaning to do since my mom passed away a couple of years ago, because she was so great at sending the children cards for all the holidays...usually with a funny joke or cartoon included...

Here are some of the cards that I made

This is one that I posted before, because I made it during the online crop...but I think that it is my favorite Halloween card from this year...I think it is so cool with all those skulls!!!

Thank you for looking!

After Halloween...

So, all the Halloween cards are sent...what card do you make next???

A 'night after' card...of course!!!

Actually, as soon as I saw the image for the Stretch n Bubbles Creative Chick Challenge this week, it reminded me of the images you see of Santa, sleeping it off, the day after Christmas...

So I printed up the digital stamp at 3" high, you can purchase it here if you did not participate last week, and printed up a couple of sayings to go with it...used scrap cardstock...and here is the result!

This was fun...I'm sure glad that I'm participating in this challenge!

Enjoy,

Meredith
